A wishlist tells you something no other part of your store does. When a shopper saves a product, they are saying "I want this, just not right now." Maybe the size is sold out. Maybe the price is a bit too high. Maybe payday is next week. Most stores collect that signal and then do nothing with it until the shopper happens to come back.
Lyst now connects wishlist activity to Shopify Flow and Shopify Marketing Automations. When a customer saves a product, removes it, or when a wishlisted product comes back in stock or drops in price, Lyst can start a workflow in your store. You decide what happens next: tag the customer, send a marketing email, alert your team, or pass the event to another app.
This guide covers which wishlist triggers Lyst adds to Shopify Flow, how to set them up step by step, five example workflows you can build today, and the limits you should know before you start.
Why connect your wishlist to Shopify Flow?
Wishlist data is most useful at the moment something changes. A product a customer saved two weeks ago is back on the shelf. A jacket on 40 wishlists just went on sale. A loyal customer saved three items from a new collection in one evening.
Without automation, someone on your team has to notice these moments, look up who saved what and react by hand. With Shopify Flow, the reaction happens on its own, for every customer, in their own market and currency.
Shopify Flow is Shopify's built-in automation tool. A workflow has three parts: a trigger (something happened), optional conditions (only if...) and actions (do this). Lyst provides the triggers. Flow and Marketing Automations provide the conditions and actions.
The Lyst triggers in Shopify Flow
Lyst adds these wishlist triggers to Shopify Flow. The names below are exactly what you will see when you pick a trigger.
Item added to wishlist
A logged-in customer saved a product to a wishlist. The trigger includes the customer, the product, the variant (title, price, compare-at price and currency at the time of saving), the wishlist (name, number of items and whether it is the default wishlist) and the market (country, language and currency).
Item removed from wishlist
A logged-in customer removed a product from a wishlist. Both of these triggers fire only on a real change. If a customer saves a product that is already on their wishlist, nothing is sent.
Wishlisted item back in stock
A variant that customers have on their wishlists is available again. Lyst sends the event once for each customer who has that variant saved, so every workflow run is about one customer and one product. This trigger needs inventory tracking turned on for the product in Shopify.
Wishlisted item out of stock
A wishlisted variant sold out. As with back in stock, the event is sent for each customer holding it, and the product needs tracked inventory.
Wishlisted item price dropped
The price of a wishlisted product went down in the customer's own market and currency. The trigger includes the old price, the new price, the currency, the drop in percent and the baseline price. The baseline is the price the customer saw when they saved the product, or the last price Lyst knew. By default, Lyst only reports drops of at least 5%, and prices are checked at least once a day.
How to set it up in Lyst
The integration is switched on by default, with all available events selected. In most stores you can go straight to Shopify Flow. It still helps to know where the settings live.
- In the Lyst app, open Settings > Integrations.
- Find the section Shopify Flow & Marketing Automations.
- Check that Enable Shopify Flow & Marketing Automations is on. When it is off, no events are sent to this integration.
- Look at the list of events. Each one has its own checkbox and a badge that says Used by a workflow or No active workflow.
- For stock and price events, choose how often each customer can trigger a workflow (see "Delivery frequency" below).
You don't have to switch events on before building a workflow. When you turn on a Flow workflow that uses a Lyst trigger, Lyst notices it and switches that event on in Settings > Integrations automatically. Turning a workflow off does not change your settings.
Events are only sent while an active workflow uses the trigger. If you switch the integration or a single event off, new events stop right away. Nothing is deleted in Shopify Flow, so your workflows stay as they are.
How to set it up in Shopify Flow
- In Shopify admin, open the Flow app, or go to Marketing > Automations if you want to send marketing emails.
- Create a new workflow and click Select a trigger.
- Search for Lyst and choose one of the wishlist triggers, for example Wishlisted item back in stock.
- Add a condition if you need one, such as a minimum price drop or a specific product type.
- Add one or more actions.
- Turn the workflow on.
Lyst then switches the matching event on and the badge in Settings > Integrations changes to Used by a workflow. To test, log in as a customer on your storefront and save a product.
5 example wishlist automations
Each example below uses only what Shopify Flow and Marketing Automations already do. You don't need any extra app.
1. Back in stock email for wishlisted products
- Trigger: Wishlisted item back in stock
- Action: send a marketing email through Marketing Automations
This is the classic back in stock wishlist flow. A customer saved a size that was sold out. When it returns, they get an email with the product, and they don't have to sign up for a separate alert. Shopify's usual rules for marketing emails apply, so only customers who agreed to receive marketing emails get the message.
2. Price drop alert for wishlist items
- Trigger: Wishlisted item price dropped
- Condition: drop in percent is at least the value you choose, for example 15
- Action: send a marketing email, or add a customer tag such as
price-drop-wishlist
Because the event uses the customer's own market and currency, a shopper in Germany sees a drop in euros and a shopper in the US sees it in dollars. The baseline price makes the message honest: you compare against what the customer actually saw when they saved the item.
3. Tag customers who use their wishlist
- Trigger: Item added to wishlist
- Action: add a customer tag, for example
wishlist-active
Tags are simple and useful. You can build a customer segment from them, filter customers in Shopify admin, or use them as a condition in other workflows. You can add a second tag based on the product type or vendor to see which customers are interested in which part of your catalog.
4. Let your team know when wishlisted products sell out
- Trigger: Wishlisted item out of stock
- Action: send an internal email to your team
When a product sells out while customers still have it saved, that is demand you can't serve right now. A short internal email with the product and variant helps whoever plans restocks. Keep in mind that the event is sent once per customer holding the variant. If many customers saved it, use a delivery limit (see below) or a condition so your inbox doesn't fill up.
5. Hand the event to another app
- Trigger: any Lyst trigger
- Action: the Flow action of another app you already use
Many email, SMS and loyalty tools offer their own Shopify Flow actions. If a tool you use offers one, you can pass wishlist events to it from Flow today. For example, you could add the customer to a list or start a sequence in that tool. Check which Flow actions your apps provide in the Flow action list.
Delivery frequency
Stock and price events can fire more than once for the same customer and product. A product can go out of stock and come back several times in a week, and a price can change again. To keep your workflows from repeating themselves, each stock and price event has a Send setting:
- Once per customer and product
- At most once every … days (from 1 to 365 days)
- Every time (at most once an hour)
- Every time, no limit (testing only)
The defaults are sensible for most stores. Wishlisted item back in stock and Wishlisted item out of stock are sent at most once every 1 day. Wishlisted item price dropped is sent at most once every 7 days.
There is also a switch called Start over when a customer removes and re-saves an item, which is on by default. If a customer removes a product from all their wishlists and saves it again, the once-only and interval limits reset for that product. A fresh save counts as fresh interest.
Use Every time, no limit (testing only) while you build and test a workflow, then switch to a real limit before you go live.
Limits to know before you start
- Logged-in customers only. Flow needs a customer to act on, so events are sent only for customers who are logged in to your store. Guest wishlists don't trigger workflows.
- Basic and Unlimited plans. The Shopify Flow integration is available on the Basic ($4.99/month) and Unlimited ($9.99/month) plans. On the Free plan, Settings > Integrations shows the message "Integrations require the Basic plan or higher" and a View plans button. Your settings are kept and start working right after you upgrade.
- Tracked inventory for stock events. Back in stock and out of stock events only work for products where Shopify tracks inventory.
- Lyst does not email shoppers itself. Lyst starts the workflow. The email, SMS or tag comes from Shopify Flow, Marketing Automations or the app you hand the event to.
FAQ
Do I need to code anything?
No. You pick a Lyst trigger in Shopify Flow, add actions and turn the workflow on. Everything in Lyst is a switch or a checkbox in Settings > Integrations.
Can I send a back in stock email for wishlisted products?
Yes. Build a workflow in Marketing > Automations with the Wishlisted item back in stock trigger and an email action. Each customer who saved the variant gets one workflow run.
Will a customer get the same email every day?
Only if you set it up that way. The Send setting controls how often the same customer and product can trigger a workflow. The default for back in stock is at most once every 1 day, and you can choose once per customer and product instead.
Does it work with multiple currencies and markets?
Yes. Price drop events are calculated in the customer's own market and currency, and every trigger includes the market's country, language and currency.
What happens if I turn the integration off?
New events stop immediately. Your workflows in Shopify Flow stay as they are, and nothing is deleted on either side.
Does it work for guests?
No. Shopify Flow workflows need a known customer, so only logged-in customers trigger events.
Start turning wishlists into action
Your customers already tell you what they want every time they save a product. With Lyst and Shopify Flow, you can answer them at the right moment: when the item is back, when it's cheaper, or when it's time to bring them back to your store.
Install Lyst from the Shopify App Store, choose the Basic or Unlimited plan, and build your first wishlist workflow in Shopify Flow.
